Q: Allegra-D?
I have been taking Allegra-D 12-hour tablets for six days now.
I believe it has caused me to have depression, anxiety, and strange dreams... all of which I never usually have.
I thought it was me being sick that was causing this however I found forums where many other people experienced the same thing.
a) does anyone know of a link between antihistamines and depression/mood ?
b) how long will it take before it is fully out of my system?
A: It did the same thing to me, so don't worry you aren't going crazy.
For me the worst of it stopped after 48 hours of no longer taking them.
After many hours of talking to pharmacists and poking around online this is what I've found: Apparently antihistamines work by blocking the affects of histamines which cause the allergy symptoms. It seems that in the process of doing this they can also block serotonin a brain chemical causing depression.
Now Allergra isn't suppose to do this - but it does.
When first introduced in Australia, the health department marked it as a drug of interest as they thought it may cause psychological side effects. For some reason though, it was then promoted as a wonder new antihistamine - side-effect free apart from a few mild effects which were also seen in the placebo trials so they were thought to not be serious.
I found one instance where a 12 year was admitted to hospital after taking it because if made them severely suicidal.

It's some information from the US Food and Drug Administration about fexofenadine - the main component of Allergera and parts of it are very interesting. They list the following as possible side effects:
Psychosis exacerbation, suicidal ideation, depression
Seizure
Visual disturbances
Abnormal liver function
Urinary tract infection/fungal
Non-accidental overdose of multiple drugs and prolonged QT
Prematurity
Maternal exposure
Medication error
My advice is to talk to your doctor and pharmacist and make sure they listen, because it is pretty terrible that an over the counter medication is doing this to people and there are no warnings about it.
Q: Is it possible to switch from Allegra D to Claritin without the speed med in it?
I was given Allegra D yesterday and took it for the first time. I'd like to switch to Claritin tonight instead to avoid the pseudoephedrine in it. Is this ok? I am totally new to allergies.
I thought it was a cold 12 days ago, but yesterday I couldn't stand the symptoms anymore so I went to a hospital and the doc there gave me Allegra D. Itchy scalp, ears, throat, roof of mouth, face. Nose so itchy inside I had to blow it like every five minutes. But I can't sleep at all on this stuff. So I'd like to switch to the Claritin tonight instead but am concerned if it's too soon since I was on Allegra D just yesterday.
A: It should be okay, as long as you don't overlap doses. You could just switch to regular Allegra, as it doesn't contain pseudoephedrine. The pseudoephedrine is the decongestant, so any "-D" allergy medicine is going to have it.
Q: How does Allegra D make you feel?
I've had a terrible cough now for over a month...It's worse during the morning and night.. I went to the doctor about a week ago and he put me on Allegra D...while it does seem to help a little...I feel awkward when i take it..i feel weak and nervous...is this normal?
A: yes it it is normal with all antihistamine drugs including Allegra D.
Q: Allegra-D nauseates me and makes me jittery, is there anything else that works just as well?
I take Allegra-D 24 hour and it works great, the only problem is that it makes me super jittery and nautious. Is there anything else that might work without those crazy side-effects...zyrtec doens't work for me and I think Benadryl makes you drowsy.
A: I use Claritin Clear for my allergy med. It kicks in a few minutes after you use it, and you won't feel drowsy or anything of the sort :). It works really well, you would just feel normal (like it wasn't allergy season lol). I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction or anything, because I'm not sure if this works for everyone.
It definetely should help though. Also, if you hold a warm, wet towel to your eyes it should relive a lot some of the symptoms. I hope this helps!!
Thank you so much for helping me with themes! They're really helpful :)
Q: Why would my body be rejecting the white half of an Allegra D allergy pill?
Sounds gross, but seriously I see the white half in the toliet everytime I take an Allegra D. And what part is the white part, the decongestant or the antihistimine?
A: I've never taken Allegra D, so I may be wrong in my explanation. There are some medications (an example is wellbutrin xl for depression) which is encased in a white shell. This shell releases the medication into your system, but is not digested or dissolved by your system. It passes through your system and is eliminated. This may be what you're seeing. Now, if the Allegra D is part white, and part another color, then my answer probably wouldn't apply and maybe someone else has a better answer. But, this is what I've found with some meds. Hope it helps you!
Q: Is it OK to take Allegra-D 24 hr with Mucinex?
I have terrible allergies and I already took an Allegra-D 24 hour this morning, but I have a lot of drainage and it is bothering me... can I take Mucinex with Allegra D 24 hour? Also, what other methods could I do/take to help with the drainage and funny feeling in my throat? Thank you!
A: Yup, they should be safe together. Allegra is an anti-histamine. D is a decongestant (usually phenylepherine) and mucinex is an expectorant. All common ingredients in cold preparations.
I agree with the person below me. There is no reason to trust the information I gave you. Although, you might want to talk to a pharmacist first, then you don't have to make an appointment if they can answer your question.
Q: What would happen if a dog ate half an Allegra-D pill?
So, I thought my dog ate half an Allergra-D pill today. I found it on the floor, cut perfectly in two vertically, with no chew marks. I have NO idea where it came from, I haven't been on Allegra in years.
But still, can't be too sure. So I took him to the vet and all seems ok.
But now I'm curious. What would have happened if he ate half an Allegra-D pill? Like his symptoms and stuff. He's 45 lbs.
Not that I plan on letting him have access to one. Just curious!
Thanks!
A: He'll be fine, allergra or any allergie pill like that is fine for dogs, it will help him if he has allergies! like a human lol sneezing. itchy watery eyes, you get the idea, so it's fine, the vet even told me this.
Q: pain relievers ok with allegra d and augmentin?
i have a sinus infection and the medicine supposedly has some mild side effects that leave me with headaches. is it ok to take some sort of pain reliever while on allegra-d 12 and augmentin?
A: I believe you can take a pain reliever (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin) with anything.
Q: how long do side effects of allegra-d 24-hour last after discontinuing use?
For the past 2 days, I've been taking allegra-d 24-hour at 4:30AM. I have hyperthyroidism, so I stopped taking it due to the fact that it increased my heart rate, made me dizzy, and made me feel very jittery and on-edge. Since it is now approaching 7AM (and I didn't take the pill this morning), how long do you think it will take for the side effects to subside? Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)
A: It should be out of your system within 48 hours.
Q: I was given Allegra D for a clogged eustacion tube. How long will it take to give me some relief?
I've taken 3 pills so far with no relief yet.
Thanks in advance
A: dunno wth that means
Q: What is the difference between zyrtec and allegra D allergy medications?
A: Zyrtec : cetirizine HCl
Allegra D : fexofenadine, pseudoephederine
Zyrtec doesn't contain a decongestant. Alegra D does.
Both work pretty well, depending your symptoms.
Zyrtec can make a person more drowsy than Allegra.
Q: Can/should I take Amoxicillin & Allegra D at the same time?
I have a severe head cold and my doctor sent me home with both of those prescriptions (in addition to three others) last night.
I'm hearing, though, that I shouldn't be on Amoxicillin & Allegra D (or any allergy medicine) at the same time.
A: boy, you have come to the right place. what better place to go with a life threatening question like whether or not to mix prescription drugs, then yahoo!answers? because everyone knows that only pharmacists who graduated in the top of their class, answer questions on yahoo!.
please call a pharmacist
Q: When is the best time to take Allegra-D 24-Hour?
In the morning on an empty stomach or at night before you go to bed? I had been taking Zyrtec-D for years, but it just stopped working finally, and I was given Allegra-D and Xyzal to try. I heard Xyzal is basically a weaker Zyrtec (which won't work for me!)
I got the Allegra-D & Xyzal as samples to see which one worked best.

Q: On Allegra D for a week, now I have a bad cold or sinus infection.?
I have taken Allegra D for a week and developed either a bad head cold or sinus infection. What can I take? I thought the Allegra D was supposed to clear my congestion.
Doctor called me back today. I am allergic to Allegra D and he told me to stop taking it. He had to put me on antibiotics.
A: Well, I understand completely... Every time I take something like that for allergies I get sick. I know it really help some people but not me. The side effects of those kinds of meds can cause upper respiratory infections, sore throat and some say sinus infections. Call your Dr. and tell them what is going on and you may need a antibiotic and maybe there is another allergy pill to help you. The D maybe to strong and causing to much drainage which can lead to sinus infection. Good Luck
Q: Has anyone taking zyrtec or allegra d found a significant change in their mood?
I have noticed that i have become very irritable and often snap at the smallest things. I was wondering if anyone has had similar experiences or anyone that knows of another alternative allergy medicine (possibly OTC) that won't give this side effect.
A: I have taken both Allegra and Zyrtec and have found no significant change in my mood...
I'm ALWAYS irritable and snap at people for no reason (whether I'm on allergy medicine or not).
sorry I probably wasn't much help.
