Q: armour thyroid?
My doc changed my thyroid meds for an underactive thyroid to armour from levoyl on tuesday of this week. I just got the bottle (while cleaning up) and it say take 2 per day. I was so used to just taking one levoyl that I have only been taking one. Should I start the correct dosing tomorrow or wait a while before upping it. It is 30 mgs and was on 112 of the other.

A: You should contact your doctor first.... or at the very least your pharmacy...at least they are trained in medications and can give you an educated answer since they would also have your medication history to look at..... Yahoo Answers is great for general junk but not for your health...save those questions for a doctor/professional

Q: How long does it take for Armour thyroid to work?
I've been taking armour thyroid for 3 months. I started at 30mg, then 60, and now 90mg and have had no change. I have had severe, constant fatigue, joint pain, and heart palpitations for the past 10 months. None of the doctors I've been to know whats going on. All the test I've done have come back inconclusive. The only reason I'm take Armour is because my sister (and deceased grandmother) has hypothyroidism. Does anybody have a clue or a suggestion or something. I'm running out of hope.

A: Excuse me?? I don't understand. You are taking prescription replacement thyroid hormones because your SISTER has a thyroid disease?? How does that help anyone? Your sister needs to be on medication, not you! You can't help her by taking her medication for her. Besides, this is both illegal and incredibly dangerous. No wonder you are having heart palpitations. Do not take prescriptions that are not prescribed to you. Especially one like this that can give you heart palpitations!

Q: Is it bad to take Armour Thyroid in your early twenties for Hypothyroidism?
I'm only 22 years old and was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and have had the symptoms for a few years now (late teens/early twenties). Will I have to be on Armour Thyroid my whole life and is it bad if I start taking it this young? I have tried alternative medicine first and it did nothing.

A: It is absolutely essential that you take thyroid medication. There are children as young as 8 who take it. But before you take anything you MUST get your adrenals tested, otherwise your thyroid meds won't do you any good. That's what happened to me. There is a book on all of this . It tells you everything you need to know step by step. It's called Stop T he Thyroid Madness. You can get it online. I don't know if it is in bookstores though. Go to www.laughinggrapepublishing.com to order. Good Luck

Q: Where can you buy Armour thyroid medication without prescription non USA resident?
I need to change my Thyroid medication to a dessicated Armour. I live in the far east and this medication is just available.

A: armor thyroid is a preparation that can mess up your thyroid function and tests quite bad, I would recommend against the use of this drug, talk to your doctor, good luck

Q: Should I take my Armour Thyroid before or after I eat?
I have been taking Armour Thyroid for about eight months, and was taking the entire dose in the morning before breakfast. After doing some research on my own, I have been reading that I am supposed to split the doses and take them before or after meals. Anyone know if it is better to take them before or after? And how long before or after? Does the medicine help you to metabolize the food? If so, it would seem like I should take it after I eat! Help!!

A: My doctor told me to take Armour first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, then wait 30 minutes before eating. When taking Armour not on an empty stomach, wait 2 hours before/after eating anything.Calcium and Iron interfere with the hormone absorption.

Q: how do i get off armour thyroid healthily?
My THS is 1.57. My doctor put me on 60 mgs of armour thyroid. I have had more headaches, insomnia and sometimes my heart races. shoud i get off the medicine? how?

A: go to www.stopthethyroidmadness.com and you will get some great input..Forest Pham. who makes armour recently changed the formulation and a lot of people (me included) are now experiencing a lot of symptoms.... ps....60 mgs is too much to start with if you have never been on meds before.....

Q: At last there is a generic Armour Thyroid drug out and it's all getting hard to get - both Armour + generic.
I wonder what's wrong with the pharmacists / drug companies now// They have to pick on one good drug that's derived from pigs... Armour Thyroid. I'd like to get the generic, but it is also just as expensive as the original -- go figure? Plus they are just making it scarce at least at the moment for me at a couple of pharmacies CVS and Rite Aid> Got any ideas of where to take my complaint?

A: The other poster stated its not pure, this is not true and has nothing to do with why its difficult to get Armour. Synthroid has been recalled more times than any other thyroid medication for inconsistency. They even had a hard time getting FDA approval. As more and more people are switching to Armour because they find it works better, the more difficult it will be to get it. Hopefully Forest steps up production of it. Also, just because a cashier at the pharmacy tells you they do not have it, don't believe them. Often the cashiers and techs are lazy about ordering it if its something they don't make a huge amount of money on. Speak to the pharmacy manager. If that doesn't work, go over their head and speak to the manager of all the pharmacies in that area. I had to do that once when some friends bought me a CVS gift card to pay for my ARmour for a few months while my husband was out of work. The tech said it could not be used at the pharmacy. I contacted coporate through the website and got the manager of the pharmacies in New England who had a meeting with all the stores telling them to accept the gift cards at the pharmacy. You can't always believe the cashier and tech. Go over their head if you need to.

Q: Is Armour Thyroid being Taken Off Market?
If Armour thyroid medication is taken off the market, when will this happen, and why?

A: From what I have read, Armour Thyroid is not being taken off the market, but is having a hard time staying on the shelves. You can find a more detailed article here: http://healthyagingreview.com/?p=270 I hope this helps!

Q: What is a good OTC substitute for Armour Thyroid pills?
My sister is prescribed Armour Thyroid pills, her doctor said she could save some money a get the same pills at a vitamin shop. I was on the same in the past and would like to find the OTC or herbal kind. Has anyone heard of something similar or sold OTC in a different strength? How well did the OTC or herbal pills work for you? And did they work as fast as the prescription kind or was there like a month or two before your condition improved? I have done some searching on the internet, but I don't if the success stories are real or what. All info. is appreciated. Thanks & have a good day!

A: Your sisters doctor is wrong. Raw thyroid sold in a vitamin shop is not the same as Armour thyroid. It's not regulated and often comes from cows. Armour comes from pigs and is USP grade inspected. If your sister wants to save money then she should go with the generic version of Armour.

Q: Is there a real difference between Armour thyroid and synthetics such as syntroid or levoxyl?
I took Armour for a few years and my new doctor doesn't like it and put me on Levoxyl? Should I expect to feel any different?

A: go to the bulletin board (under the resources tab) on this site, which is well monitored and professionally handled to get all your thyroid questions answered.

Q: Anyone have weight loss on Armour Thyroid?
I have just switched from Levoxyl to Armour Thyroid today and I was wondering if anyone has experienced any weight loss success while on Armour. I have reduced my caloric intake and increased exercise, but my weight hasn't budged. I'm hoping this switch to Armour will help me lose the extra 10 pounds. Any success stories or hints?

A: Don''t count on the weight loss just by switching to Armour. That's what I thought when I switched and it did not happen. I only know of one person who lost just by switching. If you were low on T3 levels, Armour might give you more energy to exercise more eficiently and that may help with weight loss. Remember to always test first thing in the morning and that the doctor should adjust your dosage by free t4 and free t3, not by TSH. Link to thyroid weight loss forum below

Q: does anyone know the equivalent of armour thyroid to synthroid tablets?
I'm taking synthroid before and I swithced to Armour thyroid tablets. I was taking 112 mcg of synthroid, how much armour should i be taking now? Please help;;;

A: Your dosage should be on your prescription bottle. If you're curious what the number means, the website below has a formula to convert dosages between Armour and Synthroid. If you think its too low, it may be that your doctor is tapering you into your dosage since your body is going to handle it differently from the Synthroid. People handle every brand of thyroid medicine differently.

Q: What time in a morning is Armour thyroid supposed to be taken?

A: Surely it should say on the packaging, or you should follow the directions given to you by your GP.

Q: Is armour thyroid better than taking synthetic?
I have been taking synthroid for over ten years. I believe my anxiety started when I started taking this. I have trouble focusing, my memory is absolutely terrible and I do get panic attacks - rarely though, now that I'm taking anxiety meds. My "levels" are good, I have them checked regularly, but maybe armour will help my other symptoms.

A: What is armour thyroid I've never heard of it?

Q: Is there any food restrictions while taking armour thyroid?
Just curious if there is any food or iodized salt restrictions.

A: No restrictions. Just make sure to take other supplements at least 4 hours apart to avoid any interactions. You may want to limit soy and avoid fluoride, as they slow dow thyroid function.
