Q: Used Otrivin nasal spray during pregnancy?
Hi, I am about 13 weeks pregnant and I have used Otrivin nasal spray 4-5 times in the last month due to a very bad cold. Will it harm my baby? Has anyone else used it during their pregnancy and was there any harm to the fetus because of this?

A: You should talk to your doctor about any medicines you are taking during pregnancy. Im not sure if the one you are using would hurt the baby. since its just a nasal spray I would say most likely its fine, as long as you don't do it alot, but Im not sure, ask your doctor, he will know for sure. personally when i was pregnant, I tried to avoid all types of medications, I just didn't want to chance hurting my baby. good luck.

Q: does using otrivin(nasal spray) affects the hair or health in any way?
i have been using otrivin for 2 yrs as i suffer from chronic cold now n then.

A: Long acting nasal decongestant sprays... like oxy- and xylo- metazoline ... work by squeezing the delicate tiny blood vessels within the spongy flesh and mucous membranes on the inner nose's turbinate bones. (These turbinates are a good 3 inches long and there are 3 on each nasal side wall.) They squeeze so hard that the flesh shrinks down to less than half the swollen size; that lets a lot of room open up for 6-12 hours. They do this by stimulating microscopic elastic fibers to contract strongly. They squeeze so hard that when the drug wears off and the elastin relaxes in its exhausted stretched-out state, there is often more swelling than before the drug was administered. That encourages the patient to dose up again. This self-reinforcing cycle is courting addictive dependence. If used consistently for over 5-7 days the elastin is hopelessly stretched out and the mucous membranes are starved of nutrients by the intense prolonged vasoconstriction. This is rhinitis medicamentosa, a burned-out nose. When that happens the nose stops responding to anything and remains clogged. Then you'd need to see a guy like me: an ENT specialist. There are no other bodily or hair affects of significance.

Q: Otrivin Nasal Spray over use?
Hi, I have bin using Otrivin Nasal spray too much and it has caused more congestion and even if im not using it and not sick i still have that plugged nose and cant breath out of it and im sort off scared cause some one told me only 3 days consecutive of using but i went far beond that with about a month of using it 3 - 5 times a day

A: i'm worse than you..i've been using otrivin for more than 2 years.. :( if i don't use it 4 times a day i can't breathe. it's very "addictive". that's why we shouldn't use it more that 3-5 days. you should really stop while u can. you can get info here: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/otrivin.html or just google it.. i hope this was a little helpful.. take care..

Q: otrivin question? (nasal spray)?
Hello.. i've had a stuffed nose/cold for about 4 days now, so i took ribitussin and it's helped my coughing/soar throat. My nose has been stuffy and it doesn't look like it's going to get better.. I looked in the medicine cabinet and found some otrivin (nasal spray) from about 8 months ago when i had my last cold. No one else has used it in my family, but i'm wondering if it's still OK to reuse it, or do these things expire after a certain period?.. no expiry dates on the package

A: You need to be careful using spray decongestants. If you use that spray it cannot be used more than 3 days consecutively as it causes "rebound congestion" which makes your problem exponentially worse. Go to your local pharmacy and buy some Sudafed (oral decongestant), Saline Spray, and Vapor Bath (found in baby section). Take a Sudafed (buy the store brand as it is much cheaper and has exactly the same ingredients). Also you want the Sudafed (pseudoephederine HCl) which is kept behind the counter in the pharmacy. The new and improved stuff just does not work as well. So do the following: 1) take a Sudafed as it will take 30-45 minutes to get in your system. 2) Spray your nostrils good with the saline spray. Work it up by breathing it in deeply and then blow your nose. Then spray again as it keeps the mucous membranes moist. 3) Then if you don't don't mind taking a bath you pour in a couple of ounces of the vapor bath and run about 4-6 inches of water in the tub. Get in and inhale deeply through your nose and exhale out your mouth. Breathe that way in the tub until the water cools off. If you don't like baths or want more concentrated relief fill a pan on the stove top with 3-4 quarts water/2 ozs. of vapor bath bring to a boil and then let cool for a minute or two. Take off of the heat and cover your head with a towel draping it ove the pan and follow the previous instructions. In the event your sinuses are songested take a warm moist wash cloth and place it over your nose and cheeks. Follow that with the same procedure only placing over your forehead and eyes. That should loosen the congestion improving your breathing. The good news unlike the nasal spray decongestant you can use the saline spray, vapor bath, and warm, moist cloths as often as you want to for relief. Take the Sudafed every 4 hours. That will definitely clear your congestion issues. Trust me I have had 4 operations and have been following that routine as needed for the last 10 years with great results. When it gets really, really bad I occasionally use Afrin nasal decongestant spray but only for 2 days max and usually only at tnight. Best of luck and feel free to email me if you need more insrtructions or advice.

Q: Is it safe to use decongestant nasal spray (like Otrivin) while taking Accutane pills?
??? Thanks. Because my nose is super blocked from a possible cold or cat allergies.

A: I dont see anything on this page: http://www.pdrhealth.com/drugs/rx/rx-mono.aspx?contentFileName=Acc1003.html&contentName=Accutane&contentId=05 regarding Accutane that makes it seem as though a nasal decongestant would be bad to take with it. Also, on the Ortrivin website : Do not use xylometazoline nasal if you have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) in the last 14 days. This could cause a dangerous drug interaction with serious side effects. is all that is mentioned still, i would contact the doctor who prescribes your medication and ask him if it would be okay before you take anything. Only they know your complete medical history and can give you a definitive answer.

Q: is it possible to successfully stop a 25 year otrivin nasal spray habit and how do you do it.?

A: You should consult with a doctor - preferably one other than the one who has been extending your prescription for 25 years, since long duration use is not recommended. Some people like 12-step programs for addiction - I'm not a big fan of them because they empasize powerlessness. Key elements of success include: * Admitting you have a problem * Internalizing the upside of the effect of quitting * Internalizing the downside of the effect of not quitting * Focusing on staying clean for at least 2 weeks - after that, it's a lot easier Good luck. Here's a post from somebody who beat Otrivin addiction from another forum: "Hi Stephanie, I was addicted to otrivin 3 years ago for about 1 year. I went to many specialists. What I've been told is that nasal spray can be as addictive as morphine. I had it everywhere, a bottle in every jacket and every drawer. One time I went out of town for the weekend with my at the time boyfriend and in the middle of the night realized I had no spray, only one bottle and it was empty. I had a panic attack, I thought I was dying and we were in unfamiliar surroundings so we had no idea where a 24 hour drugstore was. After that I knew I had to quit. I was also told that I had to go cold turkey. What happens is your nostrils will swell up if it doesnt have the nasal spray to take down the swelling. What I did is I took my regular dosage but only put it in one nostril at a time. This way I could still breath (not perfectly of course), then I would cut the daily dosages in half. I was completely off of it after 2 weeks. I have never used a nasal spray since and I never will. If I get a cold I will use basic cold med's so that I do not feel that immediate relief and rely on it again. Just thinking about it, I can remember the suffocated feeling I had everytime I thought the otrivin was wearing off. It was a very scary feeling. Try this, hopefully it will help. I know exactly what you're going through. Take care, Tara"

Q: Otrivin in pregnancy?
I have found out that ONLY Otrivin nasal spray works well for my decongested nose in the pregnancy. I use the lowest dose (one spray in one nostril at night) more than a month so far. I know very well that I can't use it for a long period, but... I have to. Nothing else worked to me. Does anybody used Otrivin in the pregnancy as well??? Were there any problems for the fetus???

A: Yes my OB told me to use Otrivin when I had a cold, she said its perfectly safe for the baby. But I only used it for a few days, if I were you I'd check with your OB about long-term use.

Q: Otrivin....DAMN THAT OTRIVIN!?
Ok for a period I couldnt breath from my nose so i used an otrivin nasal spray and since then......my nose is no use 12 months an year! I always hafta use otrivin at least 2-3 times a day if i want to breath......and thats for all year! all 4 seasons! please help :(?

A: You have developed a dependency upon it from constant use. Nasal sprays are meant to be used temporarily, during a cold for example, to reduce discomfort from nasal and sinus congestion. It's not meant to be used all the time.

Q: How long does it take for the antibiotic Amoxycillin to kick in?
I've been on it since thursday - now saturday, and also taking Otrivin Nasal spray, and honestly - i dont feel any better, to be honest, i feel worse...my GP wont open till monday so please dont be all "go see your dr" cos I would if I could - but just wanted to know does it take a while for the antibiotics to kick in... by the way I have a sinus infection

A: about 5 days, if they even work. unless your dr did a culture, there is no way to know for sure you have a bacterial sinus infection and antibiotics only work for bacteria, not viral infections like cold or flu. a lot of times dr's just guess and give antibiotics as a fail safe or because the patient asked. also many bacteria are immune to amoxycillin, anyway because it's overperscribed. hopefully, none of that is the case and you have the medicine you need. but if not, your body will kick it on it's own and then you will have permanent immunity to that particular infectious agent.

Q: is there a cure to sinusitis and nasal polyposis (polyps)?
I have sinusitis for the past 15 years and it is getting worse on and off.. it depends on the food sometimes like Ghee and vegegable salads makes worsens the nasal blocks I have nasal block almost all the time and I use Otrivin nasal drops to get relieved I can say that I am adicted to it if it is more worst I use Rhinocart a Steroidal nasal spray to get quick relief and it works only some weeks or months then gets worse. Doctors adviced me FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) but according to the doctors' openion this will work for few months and I will have the same problem when infection arises. is there a permenant solution to it can some one help me that leads me non-surgical permenent healing...

A: 1. Add 1/4 tsp. Sea Salt (fine) into 1 cup lukewarm distilled water in Nasal Cup (I put the solution in a regular cup and used a turkey baster and just let the water flow gently out of the turkey baster). Stir until salt fully dissolves. (Note: You may also add 1/4 tsp. of baking soda to buffer the salt - some people experience a slight irritation from the Sea Salt alone.) 2. Lean over sink with head facing down, then turned to right or left. 3. Place Nasal Cup spout (or turkey baster) in nostril that's now on top and gently tilt the cup until water is slowly flowing into nostril. Breathe through mouth. If water isn't flowing through to the other nostril, try tilting your head at different angles to open passageway. The more you relax doing this, the easier it is for the water to flow through. 4. Water will begin flowing out other nostril and into the sink. Continue until half the water has gone, then turn your head the other way and run the rest through the opposite nostril. 5. When Nasal Cup (or turkey baster) is empty, bend forward and let your head hang loosely to help get any remaining water out of the nose. (If you have mucous buildup for having a cold, you can blow your nose into the sink and it flushes the mucous out more) 6. Close one nostril with a finger and turn your head. Switch to the other nostril and do the same. 7. Blow gently through one nostril at a time, closing the other nostril with a finger to dry the nose. 8. Throwing your head back or bending over can also help get any remaining salt water out of the nasal passages. I used this method after doing a search here and not finding the recipe to use. I am just getting over a cold, and my one ear drum was blocked up and swollen. This flush not only helped my nose, but my ear drum swelling isn't as bad either. The best thing, is that I can actually breathe finally. I did all of the cleanses here last yr, and still had some minor breathing problems, though my sinus allergies were cleared up thanks to the cleanses. I never thought to cleanse my nose then during all of my cleansing. And yes, most ear infections are caused by sinus and mucous build up, so this method has worked wonderfully for that. :) Rev_HH http://curezone.com/forums/m.asp?f=123&i=454#i

Q: can you mix two types of nasal sprays together?
well what l mean is l have Saline Nasal Mist plus l have Otrivin and this is a decongestant, but would lt be harmful for me to spray the Otrivin decongestant after l just used the saline nasal spray up my nose? since l am very congested and l can`t breath right out of my nostrils.

A: Yes, but if you're going to use a rinse, I'd use the non-medicine first. Then use your medicine, & wait for at least 2 hours. When you're not using any medicines, you can use a nasal wash/rinse as often as you like. I would try a saline nasal rinse (not a spray.) A full warm water saline rinse goes in one nostril and out the other. It soothes with warmth, it draws out the entire gunk and shrinks the tissue (like swimming in the ocean, but without the eye stinging). Buffered salt doesn't 'sting' as much as plain salt water. You can use a new method like Nasopure, or the vintage, Netipot You don’t need a prescription for this therapy. If you live in a state like mine, they’ve pretty much “outlawed” sudafed medicine. Drug-free is really the way to go on a frequent-use basis

Q: For how many days can we use, Nasal spray?
Like new OTC, called otrivin O which contains a drug called Xylometazoline... I've right now got it for my cold... And i've allergic rhinitis since many years, and I want to kno can i use it freequently for ever.. Right now its giving me a great relief..

A: Its sad that drug control in india have released Otrivin O to the market as an OTC.. Its misused than its used... Since it gives immediate relief, it can only be used for a few days, to the max of 1 week.. Not more than 10 days...!!! the drug itself can cause hypertrophied mucosa and nasal stuffiness.. Its called RHINITIS MEDICAMENTOSA.. It becomes a serious problem.. Best alternative is steam inhalations, saline nasal drops... U have got it, use it for few days but not for ever... Have a gap of atleast 2 to 3 months before using it again...

Q: Im using Otrovin nasal spray....?
i did a bad drug on the weekend and my nose is SO STUFFED. im using otrovin to take it away, and its working.... but the carton says i can only use it twice a day for 3 days. why? what happens if i use it more? im already on day 3 and without the otrivin i cant breathe... 0.01% xylometazoline hydrochloride

A: It's just a warning....if your problem doesnt clear up in three days it may be an indication of a sinus infection, which will become worse if you keep using the nasal spray.

Q: can a person can die.............?

Q: I have a constant Blocked Nose. Need Help?
I have used a 0.1% Otrivin nasal spray for decongestion. Progressively the need for the spray is increasing, or the cause of the blockage is getting more severe and I have to use the decongestent more ofter. I would like to hear from someone who has similar effect from the Otrivin Nasal Decongestant Spray (0.1% or other consentrtation). AP I perticularly use the following from Otrivin: Otrivin® 0.1% Decongestant Nasal Spray I do have allergies of pollen, rag weed and dust. If the above is not suitable, what other remedy is best. If "deviated nasal septum" or a "polyposis of the nose" is recommended, what is the details of the procedure, process, healing and approximate cost. I live and work in Bangalore... Any suggestions to professionals who may be consulted. AP

A: According to your history, you seem to be having perannial allergic rhinitis, and the decongestant nasal drug you're using acts by narrowing the blood vessels in your nose which reduces the mucosal swelling and relieves congestion.. but it has only a temporary effect, as the drug effect wanes off, there is a "REBOUND CONGESTION" which compells you to take more drug again.. And it's just a symptomatic treatment, the actual treatment would be to treat your allergy, to avoid known allergens(ex. as said by you-pollens).. So you should consult an E.N.T. Surgeon who'll prescribe you drugs such as antihistamines, mast cell stabilisers, or an Allergy Specialist who'll help you removing your allergy.. And the long term use of decongestant may lead to a condition named "RHINITIS MEDICAMENTOSA" So don't just go on using only the spray, but try to remove the cause..
