Q: whats the over the counter version of Allegra D?
A: Allegra-D is an anti-histamine with decongestant. There isn't an over the counter drug that I'm aware of with the same active ingredients but for similar results you could get Zyrtec-D Its a very powerful antihistamine also with decongestant that just went over the counter. That would be your best bet. Should be located behind the pharmacy counter. They've become pretty restrictive of medications with pseudoephedrine so bring a liscense. Good luck
Q: Any reccomendations on a really really good over the counter allergy medicaton?
I take Allegra D 12 hour that the doctor gave be a while ago. I have been taking it and it hasn't really helped my nose is super stuffy and it itches and runs...it's annoying and i'm sooo miserable. I lost my insurance so I cannot go to the doctor again. Does anyone know of a good OTC Allergy medication with a decongestent in it that will actually work. I've tried Claritin before and that didn't do anything either so anything else?
A: Ack! I used to take Allegra D as did a friend of mine. We both starting talking one day and realized that we had become addicted to the sudafed in there! It's not good to be on that for a long time. When both my friend and I got off the D, we both got really tired as sudafed is a stimulant. I used Allegra 12 and 24 hour quite successfully for a long time too, until I lost my insurance as well (or my insurance didn't cover it until the generic came out). After I had to get off of Allegra, I found myself having huge withdrawal symptoms. I had worse allergies than I had started with for about a week!!! I tried Claritin, it didn't work either, and so I really started thinking about what I could do without resorting to stronger drugs. I was tired of personally funding the drug companies, and I didn't feel very good! The nose sprays made my nose bleed, the OTC meds made (still make) me sleepy when I tried them, so I had something for emergencies, but nothing I felt safe using all the time.
By the way, I only had spring allergies before Allegra whereas I used to get BAD allergies all year round when I was on Allegra bah! They got worse every year and I had to be on the Allegra more and more and longer and longer!!
Anywho, this is what I found which I sometimes smack my head in "duh-ness" about. The nasal sprays which are supposed to be more localized and better for you, work by desensitizing your nasal cells from what I understand (that's how the doctor described it). About this time, my boyfriend was telling me about rinsing my nose out with a saline solution (which I thought NO WAY IN HELL WILL I DO THAT!). I eventuall got desparate enough to start thinking, well I bet I could rinse those allergans out.... Hmm, I wonder if that would work.... I tried using a neti pot which you put warm water and non-iodized salt into, to rinse my sinuses, and VOILA, no more allergies. I stopped the allergans at the source.
Neti pots, nasal irrigation, saline rinses, seem so very primitive to me, but they work so much better. I rarely am forced to take allergy medicine anymore, and I just rinse my nose out every day. Anywho, this was a really long answer to your question, but check out these two stories from National Public Radio (NPR). This has changed my life as I can manage and control my allergies now. I used to be totally at the mercy of meds. (by the way, the neti pot/nasal irrigation works well for colds too!).

Q: What allergy medicine has FEXOFENADINE in it?
I went to the parmacy the other day looking for an Alegra D over the counter subsitue. Since Alegra D costs 100 bucks for 30 pills. She told me to get some alergy medicine with Fexofenadine in it which is the active ingrediant in Allegra D.
A: Allegra or Allegra-D also Telfast, Truludan, and seldane. Allegra is most popular. They require prescriptions however. Zyrtec-D will give you great results if you're looking for something over the counter.
Q: please help I need to ind a good over the counter allergy medicine.?
I've already tried allegra claritn benadryl sinutab with not much sucess.
I'd like to find something that has the least side effects. Any suggustions would be appreciated.
A: I agree that Zyrtec is a great option over Claratin. Many people don't find relief with Claratin because the dose is so small. As a result, if an allergic response is already underway, it can be difficult to get on top of it and relief the symptoms. Zyrtec has a much stronger affinity for the H1 receptor, but as a result, can impact other histamine receptors to cause side effects. One of these is drowsiness.
When I had really bad allergies, I would wake up in the morning, take a Benedryl and a Claratin. The Benedryl would alleviate allergy symptoms within 30 minutes (it is the best H1 antagonist on the market). That would last 4 hours, and as my body would clear the Benedryl, the Claratin would be left behind for long-lasting relief. So this is another suggestion/approach to use up the rest of your Claratin.
Q: My nose is always clogged! What do I do?
For all I can remember my nose has been clogged. I have asthma and allergies. My asthma isn't a big problem anymore. The medicines doctors have given me for my nose are Zyrtec, Allegra, Allegra-D, Astelin, Nasonex, Flonase, and Singulair. NOTHING works! I have tried over the counter stuff but that stops working after 3 days of consecutive use. Is there some kind of surgery I can get for my nose? Please help!
Thanks
Brian
A: I had sinus surgery and it was unsuccessful. I have no sense3 of smell and always have to blow my nose. I ended up going to an ears, eyes, nose, and throat Dr. He did some test and put me on a weekly shot. The only problem is I could not afford it. They did tell me that I could regain some smell and not have allergies, but it would be as soon as 1 year and as long as never. Good luck. The only way to find out is to try.
Q: poop out pills whole...why?
i take allegra-d, welbutrin, and yaz birth control. not that i am in a habit of starring at my poop but i notice them floating in the water often enough to be concerned. i have irritable bowel syndrome. i know i should see a dr but i was wondering is there a over the counter medicine to help with digestion (this particular subject is a little more difficult and embarrassing to talk about with my doc, i will make an appointment
A: To the above person, if it sinks your eating too much fat and if it floats your eating healthy.
To the questioner: If you are not digesting pills then anything over the counter is probably not going to help. Only a doctor will have a solution for this problem. Don't be embarrassed to ask a Doctor. They see these types of things everyday and there are even doctors that specialize in the digestive tract, they've seen it all.
Q: Allergies?????
Does anyone know of a good allergy medicine over the counter that really works? I have a very stuffy nose, I've been sneezing a lot, and I am very congested. I have tried benadryl, allegra-D and a lot of other allergy medicines, and and nothing seems to work for me. Please help!
A: Try a salt water nasal rinse.
Q: I mixed medicines.....................................?
I took a 180mg prescription Allegra this morning, two or three hours later I took an over the counter Claritin D, and about ten minutes after that I took an over the counter Mucinex DM. I was fine for a while, then I fell asleep out of know where. I woke up two hours later with a killer headache. When I stood up my head started spinning and I was slightly off balance. I'm seeing now that it was pretty dumb to mix all three medicines. Should I be seriously worried or just let it wear off? Is there anything I can do to make it go away faster?
A: Allegra causes drowsiness and fatigue and these might last 12 hours long.
Claritin causes drowsiness, mental confusion or blurred vision and these might last for 24 hours.
Are you feeling OK right now?
If not, go see your doctor!

A: Well, you survived and have not been admitted to hospital. Really all you can do now is let your body eventually metabolise the drugs, but please do see your doctor if you get any more bad effects.
When you stood up, it sounds like you got classic symptoms of low blood pressure. Whether this was due to the medicines or not is hard to say (it can happen to anyone at any time after lying down for a while then rapidly getting up, but the medicines may have contributed), but as long as you quickly recovered, you should be OK. That sort of dizziness after standing up shouldn't last any more than a few seconds, which is as long as it takes for your heart to compensate and your blood pressure to recover.
It is a very bad idea to mix even over-the-counter stuff. If you think you need more than one medicine, you should always enquire with the actual pharmacist or a doctor (not the salesperson!) as to whether it is OK. Some medicines can interact with each other very badly, but others are OK.
Q: I am needing some Help with itchy eyes runny nose and itchy throat due to Allergies!! PLEASE HELP!?
I am having a horrible time with my allergies and have tried several presciption meds such as allegra, zyrtec, flonase.... And I have also tried everything i have seen over the counter even claritin d. Nothing is helping. My allergies are making my life miserable for me and my kids. Please Help i am willing to try anything!!
A: It sometimes helps allergies to use a neti pot to rinse your sinuses, It flushes away the allergens and clears out the junk as well. It's better than drugs can ever be at clearing out your head. You can find them at a health food store.

Also look around the house and try to remove anything that could be adding to your problem. There may be too much dust in your bedroom too. If you have carpets clean them because they trap allergens so every time you walk over them it releases them all over again.
Q: Severe seasonal allergies?
I'm 17 and for about 4 years now I've been suffering from severe seasonal allergies. I get it all. Nasal congestion and runny nose so bad that I can't breathe properly, itchy/watery eyes to the point where once I start itching, I won't stop until my eye is completely swollen shut or where my skin in the outer corners bleed, sore throat (I'm guessing from the runny nose), itchy throat/ear and itchy nostrils.
Along with this comes sleepless nights due to the symptoms which is undoubtably one of the worst, if not the worst part of all.
I've tried almost every over the counter medication and quite a few prescriptions but none work.
I've tried
Claritin,
Claritin-D,
Benadryl,
Tylenol Allergy Relief
Sudafed,
Singulair,
Zyrtec,
Zyrtec-D,
Allegra,
Xyzal,
Clarinex
Clarinex-D
and probably more but I don't remember all.... I also had nasonex, as well, for the nasal congestion which worked a little at first, but then I kept using it and eventually, stopped working
Everytime I go to the doctor, all they do is give me different medications that do nothinggg. One or two of them will give me like a little relief but hardly anything at all compared to the scale of my allergies. No it's not a cold or anything else, my doctor ruled those out already according to my symptoms and consistant reoccurance during the same time each year.
I just want to know what my options are because these pills don't seem to be working...
Aren't there like shots or something that I could take to become immune to the pollen or whatever it is making me feel this horrible every damn day of spring?? Don't they have like a test to figure out exactly what specific allergan is affecting me and then from there, give me a shot to be immune to it?
If that's not possible, are there any other alternatives?
For eye drops, I've taken
Visine A.C.
Zaditor
Padaday
Padaday worked a little at first but now it doesn't, plus its superrr expensive!
A: I'm not an allergy expert, but I do have some advice that may help you. I found out that I was allergic to a number of foods last year and I found out something cool. Apparently food allergies can prime you for other allergies. They make you more sensitive to other things. When I cut out dairy, gluten, bananas, kiwis and a couple of other foods I stopped being allergic to cats, dust, pollen, etc. This may be something to look into. I had IGG4 allergy testing and I found it to be very useful. It's different from the standard allergy testing, that's why I mention it.
Also, mold in your home can do the same thing. You probably still live with your parents at this point, so you have less control over it, but you might have them check for mold in the home. It can really aggravate things.
And as you might know, this season has been a nightmare in terms of seasonal allergies. EVERYONE has been affected. On facebook, it seems like all my contacts have said they had sinus headaches, sinus infections, etc. Everyone is suffering right now.
Q: I am having difficulty finding Primatene Mist in my area. A pharmacist said it is no longer being made.?
Could this be true? Do you have any suggestions as to an over the counter alternative? I am having a difficult time getting a good breath. I have been taking Allegra for about two weeks. Prior to that I tried Clairitin D. I jtook a Primatene tablet a half hour ago, but it seems to be taking forever to start working.
A: If you're one of the 3 million Americans who use Primatene Mist to manage your asthma, you may have to look for an alternative. The Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee voted 11 to 7 in favor of removing Primatene Mist from drugstore shelves because of the harmful chemical it contains.
Primatene Mist Contains Ozone-Depleting Chemical
Primatene Mist, manufactured by Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, contains chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) which facilitates the propulsion of the medication (epinephrine) from the inhaler canister. CFC has been used in many aerosolized products in the past, but its use has been phased out because of its effects on the Earth's ozone layer. CFC depletes the ozone layer that provides protection against the Sun's harmful rays. (Read more about ozone and your health.)
No OTC Alternatives for Primatene Mist Users
Currently, there are no epinephrine-based inhalers on the market that use hydrofluroalkane (HKF), the environmentally safe aerosol propellant, and there are no epinephrine-based prescription inhalers on the market.
Many doctors are in favor of the ban, but mainly for health-related reasons. Doctors are concerned that many of the users of Primatene Mist are self-diagnosing and self-treating, i.e. they are not seeking medical treatment for their asthma, or what they believe is asthma. Since Primatene Mist contains epinephrine, there is also concern that consumers may suffer cardiac side effects.
Asthmatics can be better treated with albuterol", says Dr. Richard Ahrens, allergist, pediatric pulmonologist, professor at the University of Iowa and former chair of the Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee. Dr. Len Horovitz, pulmonary specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City stated, "Anybody who thinks they have asthma should consult a physician and get on a daily maintenance regimen so they have no need for a rescue inhaler like Primatene. Using a rescue inhaler means that the asthma is not under control."
Apparently, they want you to spend the money and see a Dr for your asthma.
Hope this helps.
Q: The Zyrtec Drip?
Since Zyrtec has been over the counter in the US, I have been using it (about 30 days?). It is a good allergy medicine compared to the other stuff I've been on but for some reason I have a continually drippy nose and postnasal drip while on it. At night I am very stuffed sometimes. Not like there's actual snot in my nose at night but like it is just filled with forced air and is blocked. This makes it difficult to sleep.
Does anyone else experience this on Zyrtec? What should I do, switch to Zyrtec D or just try Allegra? Or do something else entirely.
Claritin does not help me much if at all. I cannot tolerate those steroidal nasal sprays because they interact with other medicines I am on.
Thanks in advance for your help.
A: Zyrtec didn't do anything for me but swell up my sinuses. Some people swear by it but I don't know. I can't do the nasal sprays either but it's because they make my nose bleed. I like Allegra D. I don't take it everyday though. Just when my allergies act up or if I know I am going to a house where they have pets.
Q: tips to fight seasonal allergies?
hello. i usually suffer from seasonal allergies. and those of you who do too, know what i'm talking about. early before Spring arrives i start taking my prescribed Allegra 80. i take it once a day everyday. however, 3 days ago i've started feeling this throat itchiness, it makes me cough a little, and sometimes i can't even talk! and i feel it's getting worse.
does anyone know what natural tips there are to fight/control allergies, besides staying indoors and drinking lots of water, etc? ...i am drinking all the water i did not drink all year, just to make my throat feel a little relieved. i'm afraid it's coming to the point where it is not letting me sleep at night...and we are JUST entering April.
also, as we all who suffer from allergy know well, there is no cure. whenever i had to go to doctor, they say to try different medicine from over the counter, and i said i wanted something stronger, so i was prescribed Allegra 80. BUT, sometimes it takes something extra to fight it. and last year it wasn't as bad.
sorry for all the details. i'd like to hear what other things might work for people who suffer from these seasonal allergens. Thank you!
A: Believe it or not, many of your seasonal allergies are most likely caused by diet. All foods contain proteins called lectins that can collect red blood cells (agglutination) and stick to various area body systems. Wheat (bread products) gluten lectin sometimes hypersensities Type O and A blood people to substances not normally invoking a allergic response. This is really difficult... Don't eat any food containing bread for at least two weeks. Most allergy symptoms due to tree, grass and week pollen fade.
Food lectins are a major source of discomfort for many people, from IBS, Arthritis to Asthma.
Good luck!
Q: How difficult is it to live with a cat when you have allergies?
I'm moving in with some new roommates next year and one of them has a brand new cat. My allergies are pretty much limited to itchy pallet, running nose watery eyes, nothing really severe, but not something I can live with untreated for the next couple of years.
I've spent a substantial amount of (overnight) time at houses with cats but their houses were most likely alot cleaner than what our house of 5 college students will quickly become. Benadryl also helped alot in those situations, but that isn't something I can take everyday.
I'd love to hear opinions anyone has on daily allergy medication (claritin, reactine, allegra), or anything else you do to survive with your allergies. I work at a pharmacy and you don't need a prescription for most extra strength allergy medications, as well I can get the generic medications for quite cheap compared to over the counter prices so taking pills everyday certainly isn't out of the question.
A: Most allergy meds don't treat "indoor" allergies, like cats and dust mites. They mostly treat allergies to pollens and outdoor issues.
Except Zyrtec. I take zyrtec for my cat allergies, and it is the only medication that has helped me against cats. I don't get itchy skin, or runny nose or itchy eyes, and can actually pet a cat.
However (I married a man with a cat, and cant' ask him to get rid of it, besides it kills mice) after a long time of LIVING with a cat (as opposed to being exposed at friend's houses) I actually developed asthma. Even with the zyrtec, which controls any skin reactions I have, I now use an inhaler. I never needed one before. I am at the point now where even though my skin reaction is fine, my asthma gets worse every year. Being exposed to a cat that I am allergic to has compromised my immune system, and I may have to start taking an asthma preventative, instead of a rescue inhaler. I wouldn't suggest living with a cat if you don't have to. It's really not worth it.
I am not sure if allergy shots are more successful, and can prevent the onset of asthma related to allergies. I haven't tried the shot route yet, but it looks like I may. I wish we didnt have a mouse problem in our house, because I wouldn't replace this cat when he passes away. The health issues just don't seem worth it.
