Q: Do I have a cold, or the flu?
It came on very suddenly two days ago. I woke up with a severe sore throat which soon turned into my nose running, tons of sneezing, a massive headache, and a massive earache. Last night I could barely sleep and felt like crap. I could barely function today and my nose is so stuffed up I cannot breathe. I'm freezing and think I might have a fever. Cold or flu? What should I take? I took Drixoral, which I used to love, but it didn't do crap. That's why I'm guessing it's flu. Any ideas?
A: It sounds more like a cold, and with an earache, -if that is still hurting, - that is not good either. I request that you please get an appt. to see your dr. asap. Why? Because of your sore throat, to rule out strep throat, and to have your ears checked to make sure you don't have an earache. Depending on what the dr finds, you may need a week of antibiotics to help you feel better. Or, it might be a sinus infection. You said you have a really bad headache. You are stuffed up, trouble breathing, and a fever If it is a low grade fever, then it could be any of the above listed things. Or, the flu. I wish you the best. Hope you get to feeling better soon. Take care..
Q: Chronic congestion and post-nasal drip?
For years I have suffered from allergy related congestion that never, ever clears up. I am constantly hoarse, constantly sniffling, and often experience sinus headaches and sore throat. By Dr.s recommendations, I have tried Benadryl, Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, and Drixoral, but none of them really work for me. Honestly, I'm totally used to this problem, but if there is a way to resolve it, I would be forever grateful.
A: I wish I had an answer that would be of great help, but as someone who has allergies and asthma there are no easy answers for allergies.
It would be helpful if your doctor sent you to an allergist to have allergy testing done, so you could hopefully find out what it is you are allergic to so that you could get it out of your environment. Since you say it is year round it could be mold, dust, dust mites or animal dander.
I use Singulair and I think it works ok, but I still have some residual congestion and post nasal drip. I also take nasonex, that helps a little too especially my ears that always hurt from all the congestion. I was told when things get real bad to use astilin (nasal spray and it tastes awful so I don't use it!) and claritin. I have also use claranex, that was good too.
I have never tried it because I just bring myself to try it, and i don't know why, but I heard cleaning out your sinuses works good, you have to do it daily and you use a special thing I think called a Netti pot and you mix water and salt to make a saline solution and tip your head to one side and pour the solution through one nostril and it will come out the other nostril. Sounds gross, but I guess it works.
You can try allergen covers for your mattress and pillows. Vacuum and dust regularly. Good luck! I understand how hard it is.

Q: Constant Headaches?
I am getting a headache every night. It starts anytime between 5 and 7 and I go to sleep with it (and sometimes it stays overnight). My other half says it's a combination of allergies and the drastic change in temparature (goes from 50's to high 80's every day). They are not sinus headaches, it's a headache that hits where a headband would sit on my head. I just know I'm sick of being in pain and trying to not be crabby with my kiddies. I've tried some different OTC meds, but I'm concerned about taking them because something as simple as tylenol sinus can knock me out. I've tried tylenol migraine, aleve, ibuprophen, drixoral and tylenol sinus and none have helped (or they've knocked me on my butt--I can't care for my kids because I'm so drowsy). Any suggestions? This hasn't happened before.
A: Try an icepack, apply to the source of the worst pain, (across your forehead) and to temples and the back of the neck. Make sure you are well hydrated, avoid caffeine it dehydrates you,or if you do drink something with caffeine make sure you also drink a lot of water to counter it.
Does anyone else in your home get a headache during the same time? Your children, do they seem irritable at bedtime? If so, I would make sure that your home does not have a carbon monoxide leak. Even low levels can be harmful, and a headache that comes on suddenly, when you are heating your home can be caused by a leak. Do you have a carbon monoxide detector? It needs to be plugged in an outlet low close to the floor. Furnaces and fireplaces can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. If you detect it in your home get everyone out and go to the E.R. for treatment with oxygen.Call the fire dept to come and clear your home of the carbon monoxide and to verify levels are down and it is safe to re-enter.
No over the counter med or any med will help if it is carbon monoxide poisoning, you must get it out of your bloodstream by getting oxygen levels up again.Carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen in your blood, and must be treated at the hospital.
Even if others in your home do not complain of a headache I would check for carbon monoxide, my husband and son did not have a headache and did not need treatment because the rooms they were in were not affected.
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Severe headache, fatigue, confusion, pink or flushed red skin.
Q: How can I ease this continous dry cough I have from sinus infection? It's miserable!?
I've been sick for 2 weeks and a few days ago I saw my doctor. I thought it was just really bad allergies. She said, yes, it's really bad allergies and I have a severe sinus infection on top of it. She put me on Amoxicillian 875 mg, twice per day, and 2 prescrption allergy meds, twice per day. I'm still dry coughing and I cannot stand it! I've been through just about all the cough syrups there is, plus Alka Seltzer Sinus and Allergy, Sudaphed PH, Drixoral, regular Alaverts, Delysm and everything I can think of and I'm SO sick of this cough. Is there anything I can honestly get relief by taking???? I'm so sick of cough drops that as soon as they tough my mouth I'm nauseated from them.
Does the apple cider and water thing really work?
Any other remedies you all may know of to calm this hack?
Also, I've already tried Benadryl and Max. Benadryl both, no luck for the cough relief department.
A: How about just drinking some hot tea and putting a humidifier on in your bedroom while you sleep. The humidifier will work wonders.

Q: i have a cold?
i've had a stuffy nose followed by a runny nose followed by a stuffy nose for a week. ive been taking tylenol cold for 3 days, drixoral for 3 days, and now ive gone back to tylenol cold. i know it can take up 14 days for a cold to get better and dont say take more vitamin c cuz research studies show it doesnt help. i have no other cold symptoms and my ma says the doc wont give u nething for a stuffy nose aka she wont give me $12 for the copay to see the doc...ne suggestions?
A: The common cold is self-limited and runs its course in 7 to 10 days. If your symptoms continue beyond this time frame, it may not be a cold that you have. Perhaps its allergies causing this. I don't know why anyone would be so sure that you definitely have one or the other at this point.
Continue what you're doing and wait it out. You should know soon enough. And, your mother is quite wrong about what she's told you.
