Q: It is okay to give a toy dog childrens gravol?
I have a Malti-poo shih-zhu,and he often gets sick AND whines non-stop in the car. Soon i am goin on about a 1 hour drive, and a 2 hour Ferry ride. I was planning on bringin along my pup but i worry that he will just get sick and whine the whole time. I have heard of giving toy dogs 1/2 of a Childrens Gravol. Is this safe? Does it help?

A: Here in the U.S. we use Dramamine which is the same thing. The suggested dosage for dogs is 2 - 4 mg. per pound. The effects can last up to 8 hours as a mild sedation effective for nausea and vomiting. Weigh the dog, locate how many mg. are in each pill and cut the pills to achieve the lowest dosage of 2 mg. per pound. Here's a link, scroll to the bottom for the Veterinary Use section - For some reason it won't let me post the link - go to www.wikipedia.com and put in Gravol for the link I am trying to post

Q: Can I give my dog gravol to calm her down during a storm?
I have a 6 year old Rotti who is terrified of storms, fireworks and anything that makes really loud noises. She hides and pants really hard for long periods of time. I heard giving them gravol could help to calm her nerves.

A: a lot of people use rescue remedy or melatonin. good luck

Q: Is it okay to take gravol while drinking?
I have regular gravol and the natural ginger root gravol. Is either one okay to take while drinking? or an hour or two after? Is i tokay to take natural ginger root gravol, or the regular gravol while drinking or afterwards?

A: It is not proper to take gravol while drinking or combine it with any anti-depressant drugs. The ingestion of medicine and then indulging in drinking alcoholic beverages is a prescription for disaster. It is too dangerous to attempt such foolhardiness. Please do not get offended. God bless you. Good luck to you.

Q: How much Gravol can I give my dog?
I have a 80 pound 11 month old German Shepherd pup. She get car sick on long road trips and I've heard that you can give a dog gravol. I've heard that giving dogs the dose of 2-4mg per pound is acceptable. But if i were to give her the maximum doseage that would be 320mg and it's 300% more than what a normal adult has. Is this just because their body metabolizes it differently? What would be an acceptable dose to give the pup?

A: Discuss this with your vet. They can tell you if this drug (dimenhydrinate, often also marketed as brand-name Dramamine in the US) can be used in dogs, and suggest an appropriate dosing. They would also be able to suggest a canine-friendly substitute if dimenhydrinate is not a good choice. Wikipedia suggests a 50mg dose of this drug for dogs, but I would still confirm with your vet. It is never a good idea to give your animals human medications without vet direction. Medications are compounded to act very specifically in the human body, and their mechanism may not work or may have ill effects in non-humans because they lack similar targets.

Q: Is Gravol safe for cats when travelling in a vehicle?
My two cats and I are moving. It'll take four days to get there but Simon is freaked by being in his cat carrier. Will Gravol put him to sleep safely?

A: I don't think you should be giving him a drug designed for human use only. As it may have serious side effects for cats, your best bet is to go to a good pet shop or vet surgery and ask them if they know of anything to help?

Q: Is gravol a good or bad idea to give to a sick dog?
My maltipoo's been throwing up at least once a day for a couple of weeks now. I've been told to give her a small amount of gravol. What do you thinK?

A: If your dog has been throwing up for several weeks, you need to find out the reason. Gravol will only take care of the symptom not the cause, and it has been known to have adverse effects in some dogs. You should see your vet for xrays and bloodwork, there are many better medications that can control vomiting.

Q: What is gravol? Is it okay to take to relieve nausea while taking Plan B?
I heard that if you are feeling sick while taking Plan B you should take gravol to help you not throw up because if you throw up you will have to take it again.

A: You shouldn't have to take the pills again if you throw up, because if you do throw up after taking them, it means the hormone has already gotten in your system enough to make you nauseated/vomit. So you should be fine. In the future, make sure you eat something first or take the pills with a full glass of milk, as this can prevent an upset stomach. If you must take something, try taking something available over the counter like Bonine or Dramamine (most effective if taken 30-60 minutes before taking Plan B).

Q: Is it safe to take Gravol as a sleep aid?
My husband works shift work, 4 on, 4 off. On the night he is due back to work he takes 2 gravol to help him sleep. Sometimes he takes it during the shift as well. Can this be dangerous?

A: Gravol is intended as a drug to treat nausea, not as a sedative. It is generally a good idea to use drugs only for their label use. There are a number of less habit forming sleep aids available on the market right now that would likely be more effective than using Gravol. As a matter of fact, there is one medication that is packaged in two ways (same dose, same pill) for different uses. It is an antihistamine (stops itching) and a sedative. It is used as a less potent sedative for children undergoing chemotherapy so they can sleep through their treatments and is available in every pharmacy and most other places you can get cold/allergy meds. Its drug name is diphenhydramine hydrochloride but it is better known as Benadryl. The reason I am bringing this up is an interesting one...if you buy the diphenhydramine packaged as a sleep aid, you'll pay more for it (by about 50%) than if you buy the generic antihistamine. If your husband must use something to help him sleep, this is an option. However, learning some sleep hygiene skills may serve him well down the road. If you are interested in herbal preparations, in some areas, Melatonin is available from your pharmacist as a sleep aid as well. The best choice, however, is to have him talk to his doc and see if there is something that is specifically designed as a sleep aid and is not habit forming - reliance on any form of medication to sleep is frustrating and counter-productive.

Q: Is it safe to take Gravol in order to fall asleep?
When I have trouble sleeping, I will usually take a Gravol pill. I went to my doctor and she rcommended an OTC sleeping pill but I don't really like the effects of those (they are too strong, even a half is too much). Is this okay or would there be any problem with this?

A: it's fine. i take dramamine all the time to fall asleep. they're basically the same thing.

Q: How much Gravol can kill you?
I am doing a project for med school and I need to know how much of an overdose of Gravol can kill you. Say someone is 140 pounds and they overdose on Gravol. How many pills would they have to take for them to die?

A: Well if you're in med school you should know how to research this. I don't think it's very toxic. Yikes. What's really going on? Hope you don't think I'm being rude, but I wonder if you've got more on your mind than a research project. Christie I notice you posted the same question a year ago. Interesting.

A: Yes there is non-drowsy Gravol, I think it it's ginger flavoured or something to do with having ginger in it. It works just as good as normal gravol and you should be able to pick it up from your pharmacy.
