Q: How quickly can one become used to prescription drugs so they are no longer effective?
A person I know believes that one can become acclimated to prescription drugs (or even over the counter) so that they quickly become useless. I'm looking for authoritative references to the issue of development of drug tolerance in the human body. How quickly does it happen? Are some types of drugs more likely to reach tolerance level in most humans more quickly than others? If so, which ones? Is there an average number/amount of drugs the person must take before becoming tolerant?

A: Each person has a specific level of tolerance based on their age, height/weight, level of the drug, and many other circumstances. Many medications do have a certain limitation for usage before a tolerance is built up and the drug is no longer as effective as it once was.

Q: Do you struggle with prescription drugs costs?
I've spent a lot of my life either in socialist countries whether you pay nothing/a token charge for prescription drugs, or in developing countries where there is no state health care system at all, so I've seen both extremes of the prescription drugs debate. I was wondering, how good/bad things really are in the US when it comes to prescription drugs charges. Does your health care plan cover everything that you could possibly need at a good price, or do you find it tough to cover superscription drugs costs?

A: I would think it depends on your coverage, and possibly your income. I work for Division of Social Services, and most of my client's are either disabled or elderly. If a client has Medicare, which is a federal program, then they should have access to a Medicare Pard D or prescription drug plan. Depending on their income, they may be elig. to receive help paying for the premium for this plan. Some of these clients do not have Medicare. If they do not have Medicare, then they may qualify for Medicaid, which are state benefits. Again, depending on their income, they may receive "straight" medicaid, for which prescriptions would be covered, and they may have a small co-pay of $2 for each prescription. Some client's are over income and may have what is called a "Spenddown". Basically, this is like a premium, or deductible they would be reponsible for each month before Medicaid benefits would "kick in". If people have trouble paying for their meds, they may be able to call the manufactuers of the medications and try to get help directly from the companies. There may also be some local agencies who may help people who are uninsured to get meds that they need. I refer some of my client's to United Way, if they cannot afford their meds, they may be able to find local agencies who can help.

Q: Where do you get prescription drugs cheaper in the US?
My 19 year old has no medical insurance and really needs to purchase a prescription here in the US, like immediately. Canada takes 18 days and pharmacy's want over $200 for 1 month.

A: Call the doctor and see if he has some samples he can give you. Unfortunately drugs are really expensive here but most doctors have samples they can give out. My prescription is $400 a month so my doctor has been giving me samples for 2 months.....

Q: How come no one said anything when Bush and the Republican congress socialized prescription drugs for seniors?
I know that's not the term they used, but that's basically what it was. The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 was essentially a government takeover of prescription drug benefits for 24 million Americans. How come these small-government folks didn't complain about that?

A: it is because the seniors needed the prescription drugs.

Q: Do you need a doctor's prescription to get prescription drugs such as perceset in Brazil?
I am planning to stay in Brazil for several months and I don't know how the medical system works there. I was told it was no doctors prescription needed.

A: Some medicines can only be bought with prescription. Most tranquilizers and sleep medicines are in this category. No pharmacy will sell you these medications without a prescription. Other common medications, including antibiotics, heart medications, diabetes tabs etc can be bought without one.

Q: Other ways to deal with OCD besides prescription drugs?
I've been on terrible drugs such as Prozac, Risperidone and Clonazepam ( don't tell me different unless you've been on them/suffered from them yourself ). I've just weened myself off them and have been having the worst month of my life ( with currently no sign of getting better ) . In case I encounter a relapse in OCD symptoms, what other known ways could I deal with it?

A: Here is a great article which has 50 different ways of reducing ocd symptoms. For me (I have OCD), out of the 50 ways the most helpful were number 4 and number 1. I hope this will help. Link in the source.

Q: Can you buy prescription drugs from Mexico in Canada online?
I just want to know for my own wondering after hearing so many differing stories about it..can you or can you not? And is it legal? I mean to order them online and have them shipped, with no prescription.

A: Not really. It is prohibited according to the Controlled Substances Act. There are exceptions, but you still have to have a prescription and the medication must not be available in Canada. Why would you want to import medicine from Mexico anyways? It would cost more than the same medication in Canada, and you would have to wait, and pay for shipping.

Q: How can I kick my depression without prescription drugs?
I have tried all the prescription meds, and therapy. I don't want to depend on a substance to shake this depression, but I'm constantly getting sad and crying for no real reason. I'm happy with my current life for once. I'm bi-polar in the second phase, and suffering from insomnia, because I worry too much. I used to smoke pot to sleep, but I recently quit. I also have angry and happy outbursts frequently.

Q: How long does it take prescription drugs to show up in your urine if taking a drug test?
Let's say it's a persons first time ever taking it. Please, no critical answers, I am asking for someone else.

A: It really depends on what it is you are taking, for example Paracetemol only stays in your system for maximum 6 hours where as I am taking migraine tablets wich are slow release and stay in my system for 12 hours, some meds might stay longer than 12 hours but not much I dont think, as I said depends what it is.. Hope you find what your looking for x

A: exactly 8 paracetemol.

Q: How to get over depression without use of prescription drugs?
I had a baby 8 months ago and was monitored because of post-partum depression. While that has gone away, I seem to have become severly depressed from things other than the baby. I lack any motivation to do things, even eating is a struggle. I do eat but usually not until I have been starving for hours. I just don't want to get up until it's so bad that I'm in pain. I at one point had to get treatment for panic disorder. It was gone for awhile but is back again. My main problem is not being able to become motivated enough to do daily activities. I know exercise will help me but I can't do that when I have no energy. I hate prescriptions. Please don't suggest any of those to me. Any herbal or natural remedies would be great though. Thanks.

A: You could look into acupuncture, Tui Na massage, reflexology or Shiatsu, they can all lift me from the dolldrums. Aromatherapy oils and chinese herbal medicine can be helpful too. And will power ... a lot of it ...

Q: How long does it take to get prescription drugs out of your system?
My mom has been taking Haloperidol for a little over two months. She has had some terrible side effects and we have weened her off. 10mg for the first month and half 5mg for two weeks, and now she is no longer taking it as of three days ago. She took it in pill form. I was wondering how long it would take for it to be out of her system?, For the side effects to go away?

A: Call any pharmacist. They'll know for sure. You can find a 24-hour pharmacist by looking up "Pharmacies" in the Yellow Pages. They have lots of ads. Good luck to your Mom. You sound like a good daughter. :)

Q: If prescription drugs are terribly abused by teens, why isn't anyone doing anything about it?
Prescription drugs are abused all the time and most pills out there are dangerous and can cause health issues in the future even if it's not abused. It seems like there is a pill for everything yet no one acknowledges that most pills out there are bad for you and can cause harm in the future, why?

A: Three reasons: 1. Money! So simple and so insidious. 2. Drugs as emotional quick fixes. 3. Lack of ease with our emotions. And I don't have any easy answers or solutions to any of them. More on 1.: Prescription drugs are big business. So many people want to believe that the pharmaceutical industry is benevolent and honest. It's an industry like any other, and the businesses have profit as their primary goal, just like any other. It is so naive to quote the proximity to the medical world and claim that there are higher standards. There SHOULD be, but there aren't. And claiming that the legislation and regulations ENSURE there are higher standards is also rubbish. Unfortunately, the real issue is the glorification of money as a symbol of power and success, and money as a false idol has been bought lock stock and barrel by our western society, and the developing nations are following our lead. When did we forget that money is ONLY a medium of exchange, and not the end in itself? Back to something like a helpful answer to your question ... while the money problem needs addressing, we have to address our own vulnerability to these drugs in the first place. More on 2.: The underlying problem with abuse of drugs of any sort by any age group lies with the reason we feel a need to smother our emotional upsets, and feel better ... even at the expense of our physical health. Put more simply, many drugs (legal/illegal, prescribed or freely available) have the effect of temporarily changing the way we feel. So, if we feel like crap, and having a couple of drinks every day when we come home makes us feel better for a few hours, then guess what many of us do. So, it's a quick fix that if continued ensures we never deal with whatever the real problem is - the reason we feel crappy. If it's simply a bad day at work, that a nice evening and a good sleep helps us get over, then it's not a big deal. But many people are experiencing strong emotional issues that, pushed down over and over again, get worse and require more and more or stronger and stronger "treatment" to keep them at bay. More on 3.: Much of western society sees emotions as embarassing or examples of a lack of maturity or sophistication. We glorify the analytical left brain giving it the status of mature adult, and heap shame on the emotional right brain claiming it as the immature child. Our emotions, however, are very important messages and signposts - all of them. So, if we are getting very hurt by something that is occurring in our lives, but smother that emotion and pretend it's not there, then how can we make any changes to find the source of that hurt and address it somehow? Addressing the emotional issue requires support from others and some tools to do so. Both of these are often missing. So it ends up being a Catch 22 situation. To your specific question ... teenagers are learning from the society around them, and we are telling them to medicate rather than investigate. And via the availability of prescription drugs, we're giving them another simple means to do medicate, and little of the support and tools to investigate.
